How to Prepare for Your First Interior Design Consultation

A little preparation makes your first conversation with a designer far more productive. Here is what to gather and think about beforehand.

Your first consultation is where a designer learns about you, your space and your goals. The more clearly you can share these, the more useful the conversation will be.

Gather information about the space

  • Floor plans or architectural drawings, if you have them.
  • Rough measurements of the rooms involved.
  • Photos or a short video of each space, including ceilings and windows.
  • Details of anything that must stay, such as existing furniture or fittings.

Collect inspiration

Save images of rooms, furniture, colours and materials you love, and note what you like about each. Images of things you dislike are just as helpful.

Think about how you live

Consider who uses the space, how you entertain, what storage you need and what frustrates you about the current layout. Practical details shape the design as much as style does.

Be open about budget and timing

Sharing a realistic budget range and any key dates, such as a move-in date or an event, helps the designer suggest solutions that fit. It is fine if you are unsure; a good designer will help you understand the options.

Prepare your questions

Write down what you want to know about the process, scope, timeline and next steps, so nothing is forgotten in the conversation.
